For the Love of Zimbabwe!

The third graders in our school are doing a big project to support children and schools in the African country of Zimbabwe. We will hear about their efforts, see them around school wearing red, and help them collect funds. I thought this week that we might do some research of our own to better understand this beautiful country.

There are 2 parts to this week's blog response.

Part 1: Read article

2. Click Library Media Center

3. Click World Book

4. Click World Book Kids

5. Search "Zimbabwe"

6. Read article entitled, "Zimbabwe"

Part 2: Respond to article. Write an EXPOSITORY comparative/ contrast piece. What are 2 things the US has in common with Zimbabwe? What are 2 differences?

Remember, World Book is a resource for you to use anytime that you need to research a topic. If you were using it as a resource for a project, you would want to make sure to cite your sources!

Have a GREAT week! If you feel strongly about this cause, consider bringing in some money to support our Third Grade friends and thier global project!

  3. Zimbabwe is always hot and we don't get really hot weather but we get warm weather. We have electricity and they don't. They have to salt their food to keep it fresh and we can just stick it in our refrigerator.

  4. There are a couple of things that Zimbabwe and the US have in common. The US and Zimbabwe both speak English. Zimbabwe has a big waterfall, and so does the US.
There are also differences between us. In Zimbabwe, most people farm for a living. In the US, most people do not farm for a living. There is also a different form of government in the US.

First one thing that is different is,Zimbabwe lies on a high a plateau we normaly live on flat ground. Also, corn is the chief crop and the people's main food we don't have corn as our main food. One thing that is the same is,whites in Rhodesia controlled the government, just like when whites here were treated better. One last thing is,cattle are raised on large ranches, Just like many many places in yh U.S.!

Two things that are different with the US and Zimbabwe are their roofs are made of grass and the US roofs are made of shingles. Zimbabwes people pound corn and make into flour and it is called sadza or mealies. The US does not pound corn. Also we have two different flags.

  7. Zimbabwaye is sort of similar to the United States of America. First of all, most of Zimbabwaye speaks English, like us. A thing that is diffrent between us and Zimbabwaye is that Zimbabwaye's housing is made with grass roofs while our houses are made with mostly brick with a nice wooden roof covered with shingles. Another way that Zimbabwaye and the USA have in common is that we both were ruled by England and then fought for our freedom. Another way they are different is that we are on the continent of North America while Zimbabwaye id located on the continent of Africa.

  9. Similarities
In Zimbabwe, the offical language is English just like here. Also, Zimbawe was controled by the British just like we were.

    Differences
The people that live in Zimbabwe live with grass roofs over their heads while we live with secure roofs over our heads. Zimbabwe was controled by the British from 1897-1964 when we were controled by the British for a way shorter time than that.

  12. Zimbabwe and America are two great countries. The people in both countries speak English. Each place has dollars for their money where 100 cents equals 1 dollar. Two differences are our democracy is different from theirs and the people live in grass roof houses. I like learning about Zimbabwe.

  14. I think Zimbabwe is good and liveable country with perfect water system. Since I live here, I would not take all the things I have for granted. All they really have to do is walk to school to get there, we have enough money to pay for school and get transportation and get to use laptops. All in all, I think the third graders are doing great to help out with all the trouble in Zimbabwe. Great job!

  22. Did you know that Zimbabwe is both similar and different compared to the United States? First, they are the same because the people both talk mostly in English, our official language, like Zimbabwe. Also, the United States has farming in many of the five regions. In Zimbabwe they also have farming almost everywhere. But, they are different because we were not owned by white farmers. Plus, corn is not the U.S’s chief crop, when it is Zimbabwe’s. Now you can see that the United States Of America can be similar and different than the country, Zimbabwe.

I got this information at www.worldbookonline/Zimbabwe

  24. There are many differences and similarities between Zimbabwe and the US. One of the similarities is that we farm corn, and they farm corn too. We also both had a war to win independence from England. The difference is that we have nice and developed schools, and they don't. They live in grass houses, and we don't. Thank you for listening and I hope you have a great weekend!
